Background of the study
Inter-school competitions are increasingly recognized as a dynamic tool for enhancing academic motivation among secondary school students. In Misau LGA, Bauchi State, such competitions provide platforms for students to showcase their academic talents, foster a spirit of healthy rivalry, and encourage excellence beyond the classroom (Ibrahim, 2023). These competitive events span academic quizzes, debates, science fairs, and sports, each contributing uniquely to the motivational climate within schools. Research indicates that participation in competitive activities can boost self-confidence, improve problem-solving skills, and ultimately lead to better academic performance (Nwachukwu, 2024). However, the extent of this influence varies based on factors such as the level of organization, available resources, and support from school authorities. Furthermore, while some educators believe that competitions spur students to strive for excellence, others caution that excessive emphasis on competition may lead to undue stress and negative peer comparisons (Yakubu, 2025). This study seeks to assess the role of inter-school competitions in stimulating academic motivation, exploring both the positive impacts and potential drawbacks. By examining the mechanisms through which these competitions affect students’ academic drive, the research aims to provide insights that can help schools design more effective competitive programs that bolster academic performance while maintaining student well-being.
Statement of the problem
Although inter-school competitions are widely implemented as a strategy to motivate students, their actual impact on academic motivation in Misau LGA remains unclear. Many schools report mixed outcomes, with some students exhibiting enhanced motivation and improved academic performance, while others experience increased anxiety and distraction from regular studies (Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of consistent data on the effectiveness of these competitions presents a challenge for educators and policymakers aiming to harness competitive activities as a motivational tool. In some instances, inadequate organization, limited resources, and poor follow-up on competitive outcomes have led to diminished benefits. Moreover, the competitive environment may inadvertently foster negative behaviors such as unhealthy rivalry and burnout, which counteract the intended academic benefits (Nwachukwu, 2024). This study intends to systematically assess the influence of inter-school competitions on academic motivation, identifying the conditions under which they yield positive results and the factors that impede their success. Addressing this problem is critical for developing balanced competition frameworks that enhance academic motivation without compromising student well-being (Yakubu, 2025).
